The Challenges

Based on the Tour de France rider jerseys, participants can take part in the following three challenges.

In summary:

If you are new to cycling you will be contributing to your team’s white jersey totals

If you already cycle to work then you will be participating in the green jersey challenge

And both white and green jersey participants will contribute to the yellow jersey team challenge totals.

yellow jersey1. The YELLOW JERSEY CHALLENGE

A challenge for teams to increase their total number of cycling journeys they make.

Each team member keeps a record of their journeys ridden and individual totals are added to the team Yellow Jersey total at the end of the Challenge.

If you wish to set targets for overall cycling and not simply commuting, you can also add recreational journeys to the total!

green jersey2. The GREEN JERSEY CHALLENGE

Individuals set targets to increase their cycling distance or trips.

This challenge is for individuals, and is highly personalised. Parameters and targets are set by each person and could include the following:

  • Riding to work a set number of days, or an additional number of days per week
  • Increasing the total number of miles ridden (commuting or recreational)!

All personal challenges go towards the team Yellow Jersey challenge totals.

NB if you set your own unique challenge, remember to record how many trips/miles you do during the challenge period - you can download the Record of Progress chart here.

white jersey3. The WHITE JERSEY CHALLENGE

Teams attempt to recruit new commuting cyclists

This team event involves recruiting as many new cyclists to your team as possible. The information recorded about number of journeys, or miles cycled by those cyclists during the challenge can then be submitted. This is a great chance to highlight, and reward the specific achievements of those new to cycling regularly in London.

NB if you set your own unique challenge, remember to record how many trips/miles you do during the challenge period - you can download the Record of Progress chart here.

NB. These are general guidelines for how your organisation might wish to participate and are not intended to be prescriptive, nor are they intended to promote competition between organisations. TfL encourages you to think about what type of challenge might best suit your organisation and welcomes your personalised submissions - for individual / inter-organisation targets.
